Loren W. Tauer

Cornell University

Loren W. Tauer joined the faculty of Cornell University in 1979 after completing his Ph.D. and serving as an Instructor at Iowa State University. His tenure at Cornell has involved research, teaching, and extension in the areas of agricultural production and finance. He taught a graduate course in production economics at Cornell for many years, introducing production concepts to well over 500 graduate students. He served two separate terms as the Director of Graduate Studies in the then Department of Applied Economics and Management, and he served as the first David J. Nolan Director of the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell. His involvement in the Northeastern Agricultural and Resource Economics Association began early in his career with regular attendance at the annual meeting, where he has presented 13 papers. He has also published 12 research articles in the Agricultural and Resource Economics Review and its predecessor, the Northeastern Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics (NJARE). During his term as editor of the NJARE, he initiated the annual call for papers on a specific topic, beginning with “The Effects of Agricultural Production on Environmental Quality,” and which later evolved into special sessions during the annual meeting. As journal editor he was instrumental in changing the name to the current title, with the change occurring with the first issue of the incoming editor. He served as president of the NAREA in 2000-01. Among his accomplishments as president, he approached AgEcon Search about the possibility of posting journal articles on their website and, with permission of the Association Board, the NAREA’s journal was the first to list articles on that site. Over the years, 5 of his M.S. advisees have won the thesis of the year award from the Association. He was honored with the Association’s Distinguished Member Award in 1993.
